Pink Beach – Bonaire

About this beach

Pink Beach is on the southwest coast, about 10 km south of Kralendijk, on the sea side of the coastal road past the airport and the salt pier.

The beach is mostly coral rubble and stones, with patches of light pink sand. The colour comes from foraminifera: tiny single-celled marine organisms with pink or red calcium skeletons. The waves grind them into grains that mix with white coral sand. The pink is subtle and easiest to see at the waterline in the morning or late afternoon.

You walk straight into the water and the reef begins a short swim from shore. It is also a well-known dive site, so snorkellers should watch for divers and boats. Water shoes or sturdy flip-flops are recommended. There are no restrooms, showers or beach bar, and only a few palm trees give shade. Parking along the road is free. It is quiet on weekdays and early in the day; at weekends and on public holidays many island residents come. Kitesurfing is not allowed here.
